Get Involved with NMTE

Interested in joining the New Musical Theatre Exchange? We welcome composers, lyricists, and librettists who are committed to developing original musical theater.

Membership Process

Our membership process is designed to help you get to know our community and for us to get to know your work:

Step 1: Audit Two Meetings

Attend two of our monthly meetings as an observer. This gives you a chance to:

  • Experience our workshop format
  • Meet current members
  • Understand our collaborative approach
  • See the variety of work being developed

Step 2: Present Your Work

At a third meeting, present a piece of your musical theater work:

  • A scene with dramatic dialog, music and lyrics
  • An overall outline for a story to be musicalized
  • A song with dramatic context

Step 3: Membership Vote

Following your presentation, current members vote on your acceptance to the group.

What We Look For

Our focus is on developing musical theater for readings, workshops, and eventual staging. We’re looking for artists who:

  • Are interested in creating original musical theater — telling compelling stories with words and music
  • Want to workshop and develop their material with other creators
  • Are interested in collaboration and feedback
  • Have goals of getting their work produced and performed
  • Can commit to regular participation in our monthly meetings

If creating original musicals for performance is your artistic goal, we welcome you to connect with us.

Note: you do NOT need to have staged anything or be at any particular point in your professional career! Interest and some evidence of commitment and skill, along with a collaborative attitude, is what we are seeking.

Getting Started

We meet on the third Sunday of most months at the Playwrights’ Center, 710 Raymond Ave, St. Paul.
